The usual suspects will be showing their faces, VERDE VAI batucada and samba enredo of the highest quality, ERE AfroSamba batuque baiano featuring the charismatic Xavier Osmir, Maco - anarchic clowns taking a jump up, funkatoo swipe at mangue beat and Maracatu and finishing with Mestre Pacheco and Coco do Reino taking us into the early hours with traditional Coco de Roda! Tues 27/09/05 Welcome to Umbela Newsletter #2! Who knew we'd make it this far!
What a busy couple of weeks we've had....MEdN played twice at the UK Brasilian Film Festival organised by Jungle Drums to great acclaim - and resulting in 3 months of free advertising! Pete J is currently putting together the ad, so cheers to him for that.
And of course, there was the highly successful and enjoyable party at the Grosvenor on Sunday - thanks to everyone who came down. Those of you who didn't missed a great party - and a sneak preview of the Glastonbury DVD featuring MEdN, Ére, Cóco, Verde Vai...and some sketchy band leaders speaking after 5 hours of constant drumming...!
There will be another Umbela @ the Grosvenor on Sunday Oct 30th, so get it in your busy busy diaries nice and early now! We'll also be concentrating on promoting the workshops on Tuesdays and Thursdays - any help and additional publicity you guys can give us is always appreciated...we have really nice flyers (as I'm sure you've seen) so if you know of some suitable places to leave some - colleges, clubs, record shops, etc - don't forget to grab some next time you're at The Grosvenor.
And of course, if you have additional info to put in here....let me know!!
Cheers, Oli
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maracatu Estrela Do Norte Workshop as usual on Thursday 29/09/05
Umbela Brasil Newsletter Issue 1: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mon 19/09/05
Hello! This is the first Umbela Brasil Newsletter. The aim is to keep everyone who's involved in the Umbela groups - Maracatu Estrela Do Norte & Bloco Ére - informed about upcoming gigs, events and other related activities via this weekly newsletter.
Hopefully this will become the main medium for information about all these things and more, and be a way of keeping in touch with everyone. In this way we'll create a lovely sense of community and so forth!
Anyhow, we'll see how it goes; any comments, improvements, etc, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do.
And of course, if you have important info to put in here....let me know!! (Oliver.freke *at* bbc.co.uk)
Cheers, Oli
